Vietnam is located on the Indochina Peninsula in Southeast Asia. Because of its beautiful countryside, beaches and friendly people, it has become a popular tourist destination.
The Socialist Republic of Vietnam, as it is officially called, has over 90 million people.
Once part of Imperial China, Vietnam became independent in year 939. In the mid-19th century, the country was colonized by the French and then occupied by the Japanese in the 1940s.
After World War II, Vietnam became a conflict zone between the communist world and the United States and some of its allies. The Vietnam War ended in 1975 when the divided country was unified and Hanoi became the capital city.
In 1986, the Vietnamese government launched a series of economic and political reforms that has helped integrate the country into the world economy. Today, it enjoys one of the most rapid rates of growth in the world.
